2014 WCQ: Byers nets in defeat to USA

Reaction to Antigua & Barbuda’s 3-1 defeat to USA on Friday night.

Antigua should by no means feel to disheartened. They were up against a stylish, ruthless United States outfit that took their chances swiftly and possessed an attack spearheaded by the likes of Herculez Gomez and Clint Dempsey.

The Benny Boys have already surprised a few in getting to this stage of the CONCACAF qualifiers – needing to negotiate a preliminary stage of qualifying just to be here. Group C is a tricky one, but despite defeat last night there is still a room for optimism.

The great Peter Byers got on the scoresheet, making it 2-1 and injecting some hope into the Antigua team. This can only be a positive that Byers is hitting good form, ahead of the side’s rival clash with Jamaica this Tuesday night.

It was a tough test, a test that Antigua came through pretty well. Now all heads must be turned to midweek, though.

Coach Tom Curtis, also manager of Barracudas, has a healthy looking squad to select from with Reading star Mikele Ledgerwood the pick of the bunch. With Guatemala and Jamaica, who beat the former 2-1 on Friday night, the other two sides competing it out for progression – Antigua must be on top of their game throughout the duration of this enthralling group stage battle.
